Common Reasons Life Insurance Claims Are Delayed

Life insurance claims are usually paid promptly, but delays do happen, almost always for a handful of predictable reasons. Knowing them ahead of time is the best way to make sure your own policy doesn’t become a slow one.

Incomplete or outdated beneficiary information

If a beneficiary’s name, contact information, or relationship to the insured is unclear or out of date, the insurer has to spend time locating and verifying the right person before releasing funds.

The contestability period

Most policies include a two-year contestability period from the start date. If a death occurs during that window, the insurer is generally permitted to more closely review the original application for material misstatements (such as undisclosed health conditions) before paying the claim, which can add time.

Missing or incomplete claim paperwork

A claim typically requires a certified death certificate and a completed claim form. Delays are common simply because a beneficiary doesn’t know these steps exist or is waiting on the death certificate itself, which can take a few weeks to obtain.

Cause of death requiring further review

Deaths involving accidents, unclear circumstances, or where an autopsy or investigation is pending can take longer simply because the insurer is waiting on official documentation before it can process the claim.

How to help your family avoid delays

  • Keep beneficiary designations current and specific.
  • Tell your beneficiaries where to find your policy information.
  • Answer application questions completely and honestly. This is the single biggest factor within your control.
